The Indian Railways is all set to launch its newest Vande Bharat train between Mumbai and Goa. The new train will cut down travel time by almost an hour when compared to the current fastest train on the route, Tejas Express, which takes over eight hours and 50 minutes to cover the same distance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reported to virtually inaugurate the train on 3 June. The Mumbai-Goa Vande Bharat Express will have 10 halts and cover the 586km distance in eight hours. The halts include Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Roha, Khed, Ratnagiri, Kankavli and Thivim. Running at 120 kmph, the Mumbai-Goa Vande Bharat Express is equipped with state-of-the-art braking systems that result in smoother acceleration and deceleration and cuts down on travel time. It features improved safety features and a train collision avoidance system. This eight coach train has the usual Vande Bharat luxury of 360-degree rotation seats, automatic sliding doors and LED lighting for a calming ambience. There is also special seating for persons with disabilities.
The Vande Bharat Express, (वंदे भारत एक्सप्रेस) also known as Train 18, is an Indian semi-high-speed, intercity, EMU train which was designed and manufactured by Integral Coach Factory (ICF) at Perambur, Chennai under the Indian government's Make in India initiative, over a span of 18 months. The unit cost of the first rake was estimated at ₹100 crore (US$13 million), although it is expected to go down with subsequent production. At the original price, it is estimated to be 40% cheaper than a similar train imported from Europe. The train was launched on 15 February 2019, by which date a second unit will have been produced and readied for service. The service was named 'Vande Bharat Express' on 27 January 2019. As of Aug 2021, the Indian Railways operates two Vande Bharat trains, one from Delhi to Varanasi and the other from Delhi to Katra. In January 2021, Indian Railways awarded the contract for supply of propulsion and control equipment of 44 rakes to Medha Servo Drives, based at Hyderabad. Train No.is 22439 Up (Delhi-Katra) 22440 Dn (Katra-Delhi). Vande Bharat Express is designed to be capable of running at a maximum speed of 200 km/h (120 mph), but the tracks on which the train operates are not capable of supporting such high speeds, hence the train is operated at a maximum speed of 130 km/h (81 mph). During the trials it achieved a record speed of 180 km/h (110 mph). This made it the fastest train to run in India and the second fastest operating train in India, behind the Gatimaan Express which operates at 160 km/h (99 mph). In 2022 Union Budget, the government announced to manufacture 400 more Vande Bharat Express during the next three years.
