Sheffield Bridgehouses Footbridge - 1795 Iron Bridge Across River Don

The Bridgehouses footbridge was built in 1795 across the River Don.

The opening of the Bridgehouses Railway Station in 1845 saw a large increase in foot traffic as the bridge was one of the main thoroughfares to the station across the River Don. However by 1851 the station at Bridgehouses was goods only after the opening of the larger Sheffield Victoria Station on top of the Wicker Arches.

Tragedy stuck in 1864 when the Dale Dyke Dam burst and a surge of flood water flowed downstream and caused widespread destruction and loss of life. The Bridgehouses footbridge was destroyed.

The bridge was rebuilt and opened a year later.

The bridge was further renovated in 1921, however development of the land has left it known as the ''bridge to nowhere'. For many years, one end of the bridge was a brick wall and access to the bridge was not possible.

In 2007, changes to the Sheffield Inner Relief Road meant the bridge was surrounded by dual carriageways.

These days, although the bridge is still a dead end, the bridge and surrounding land is cared for by a volunteer group - Friends of Bridgehouses Footbridge.

My channel was set up in 2020 mainly to feature my running adventures. I planned to film and showcase the days out and destinations my running travels took me. Mainly the Peak District and the sights and marvels of Sheffield and the surrounding regions.

However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few.
So the videos you'll find will be mainly be of those things. Of course, where possible I'll be running to my destination.
