The Lee Dingle Plateway Bridge - Telford - Monumental - 1872
Описание
in 1872 the Owners of Blists hill blast furnace & Meadow pit colliery solved a solution of getting coal to the furnace by bridging a steep dingle.
Monumental finds out more.
The History
Getting coal into Blists hill furnace was the most important element of making iron and the nearby colliery at meadow pit was separated by a steep sided dingle.
The solution was to link the two sites by a Wynd and a plateway bridge that will stand high above the railway below.
The lattice girder bridge remained in operation until the pit closed and eventually the furnaces closed.
Both the wynd and the bridge are grade two listed.
Work is currently underway assessing the renovation work ahead of funding to restore this monument.
Find out more about the bridge and the furnaces by visiting the Blists hill museum site.
