In the early 1960s before it was proposed to be the location of Singapore’s second port and later developed into an industrial estate, Jurong which was located in the west of Singapore, was mostly jungle and mangrove swamps.
The Jurong railway line was meant to connect the future Jurong industrial estate with Malaya to facilitate the transfer of goods. It was constructed at a cost of SGD5 million and stretched a total of 12 miles from Bukit Timah to the industrial estate.
Construction began in 1963, and was officially opened in March 1966. Its potential however was limited by Singapore’s separation from Malaysia in 1965. Its importance declined due to low usage, and was exacerbated by the completion of the Ayer Rajah Expressway in the 1980s. The line was eventually closed in the 1990s.
Much of the railway has since been dismantled to accomodate housing and industrial developments. Yet, some gems exist, waiting to be unearthed and found.
